From the mid 1960s until the early 1970s, Detroit’s music scene exploded not only with the Motown sound but also rock and roll. Most of Grit covers the development of this scene and the stories behind it, focusing on the greats such as MC5, Iggy Pop and the Stooges, Grand Funk Railroad, Bob Seger, and John Lee Hooker as well as lesser known yet locally important acts. Carson, a disc jockey, writes from an insider perspective when arguing that the Detroit scene was both bigger than Motown and heavily influential in the development of rock and roll. Although he details the bands, clubs, and ballrooms popular with a young white fans, this social history is more descriptive than critical as race, class, and politics are left relatively untheorized.
